Change the mood with aromatherapy: How different scents can affect our mood



How does the smell of freshly baked cinnamon buns makes you feel? Maybe the aroma takes you back to grandma's kitchen. Or the smell of the sea, maybe it brings back memories of summer holidays. The emotions that arise when we smell a particular scent are due to the activation of our 'olfactory system', which stimulates areas of the brain that process emotions and memories.

Furthermore, a Swedish study has shown that natural scents from herbs, fruits, flowers, pines and grass had a calming effect, increased well-being and enhanced the sense of presence for participants. Reactions that all help to reduce stress. 
Using essential oils can be a way to bring nature into your home. Essential oils can possess different properties that contribute to different moods. Common properties that essential oils can possess are; uplifting, calming, grounding and rejuvenating.

Energizing oils

Jasmine essential oil is known as the "king of essential oils". It has an elegant scent believed to lift spirits and boost self-confidence. Jasmine is known for its sweet, romantic fragrance. 

Bergamot is known to boost your mood and help reduce stress. The oil also has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent properties. Bergamot has a fresh citrus scent.

Peppermint is known to possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic and astringent properties. Peppermint is known to relieve muscle and joint pain, headaches and nausea. In addition, it can contribute to increased energy.

Soothing oils

Lavender is known to have many positive properties. It is full of antiseptic, antifungal, antimicrobial properties, making it one of the most versatile essential oils and a must-have in every home. Its fragrance is known to calm, relieve stress and contribute to good sleep.

Ylang-Ylang is said to contribute to an increased sense of calm and reduced stress and anxiety. The oil may also have positive effects on the skin and hair. This oil is popular to use in the bedroom or during yoga session. The oil has a rich and floral fragrance reminiscent of lilac.

Chamomile is known to have a wonderful soothing effect, soothing anxiety, tension, anger, and fear, making one feel relaxed, patient, and peaceful. The oil has a warm, sweet and slightly herbal scent that many, what you might call a " gentle" fragrance. 

Grounding and rejuvenating oils

Patchouli is known to have a grounding and balancing effect on the emotions. Patchouli is said to aid in the recovery of the skin and is said to have properties that reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars and stretch marks.

Sandalwood has a wonderfully relaxing scent and is said to calm tension and anxiety, its properties being more soothing than uplifting. In addition, the use of sandalwood is believed to give users a peaceful and calm feeling. Sandalwood has a scent that is sweet, creamy, smooth, and warm all at once.
