Creating Good Habits: The Way to Make it Stick

Creating Good Habits: The Way to Make it Stick

Posted by Ulrika Dehlryd on

Habits are an essential part of our daily lives. They are the behaviors we repeat automatically without even thinking about them. But not all habits are good for us, and some can be downright detrimental to our health and well-being. The good news is that you can create good habits with a little bit of effort and determination. In this post, we'll share some tips and tricks for creating good habits that stick.

Start small

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to create a new habit is trying to do too much too soon. The key to success is to start small and gradually build up momentum. For example, if you want to start exercising every day, start with just 5-10 minutes of activity and gradually increase the duration and intensity over time. This approach is more sustainable and less overwhelming than trying to go all-in from the start.

Make it a routine

Habits are easier to stick to when they become part of your daily routine. Try to schedule your new habit at the same time each day, so it becomes a natural part of your routine. For example, if you want to start meditating every day, try to do it first thing in the morning, before you get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the day.

Use triggers

A trigger is a cue that prompts you to take action. For example, if you want to start flossing your teeth every day, you can use brushing your teeth as a trigger. Every time you brush your teeth, you'll remember to floss too. Triggers help you automate your habits and make them more effortless.

Make it enjoyable

One reason why people struggle to stick to new habits is that they aren't enjoyable. If you're trying to create a habit you don't enjoy, it's going to be difficult to stick to it in the long run. So, try to make your new habit as enjoyable as possible. For example, if you want to start reading more, choose books that you find interesting and enjoyable.

Track your progress

Tracking your progress is a great way to stay motivated and on track. When you see progress, it's easier to keep going. Use a habit tracker app or a journal to keep track of your progress. Celebrate your successes along the way and use any setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow.

Stay consistent

Consistency is key when it comes to creating good habits. Try to stick to your new habit every day, even if it's just for a few minutes. The more consistent you are, the easier it will be to stick to your new habit in the long run.

Creating good habits takes time and effort, but it's worth it. The benefits of good habits are numerous, from better health and well-being to increased productivity and success. By starting small, making it a routine, using triggers, making it enjoyable, tracking your progress, and staying consistent, you can create good habits that stick. So, what habit will you start today?
