It's been hard to escape the growing cold bath trend in recent years. But what actually happens when we jump into freezing water? When the body is suddenly exposed to the cold, our "fight or flight mode" is triggered. This is the body's response to stress when we are in danger (or when we jump into freezing cold water). When this happens, the body's own hormone, noradrenaline is released which, among other things, helps us to focus better. Regular cold baths have also been shown to have a positive effect on our stress management, as the body learns to regulate stress hormones over time.
A Finnish study of nearly a thousand cold bathers found many health benefits:- Mental well-being, fewer stress symptoms
- Improved self-confidence
- Increased blood circulation
- Improved sleep
- Reduced pain
- Improved ability to concentrate
Although jumping into freezing cold water can be uncomfortable, there seem to be a lot of health benefits.
Get inspired by othersIf you want to get inspired by others and delve deeper into cold bathing and its benefits, we recommend Helena Kubicek Boye's fine book "Wild Swimming". Kubicek Boyes is a licensed psychologist and also a passionate wild swimmer who hasn't had a cold since she started cold bathing. Buy the book.
Keep in mind that people with heart disease or high blood pressure should consult a doctor before cold bathing.
